Socio Economic Impact

The results of LTFE helped in enhancing crop productivity and also economic benefits. Thus, implementation of technology has a good socio- economic impact.

  • Balanced use of nutrient resulted increase in productivity from 0.6 to 2.5 t ha-1 in Alffisols. By using the strategy developed from LTFE, we could produce nearly 40 million t additional food grain from 25 m ha-1 acid soil of country which would be enormous contribution.
  • In situ green manuring resulted in saving of 50% fertilizer besides a profit to the tune of Rs. 5000 to 6000 ha-1to the farmers. It has significantly reduced the dependency on chemical fertilizer which in turn reduced cost of cultivation. At present this practice has been extended to 1000 ha area in Kerala and farmers are gradually shifting to green manuring as this does not require any additional input and also very well fit in the cropping system.
  • The continuous use of P in fertilizer schedule in intensively cultivated area has led to build up in soil P which poses contamination of water bodies. The strategy developed in LTFE would result in nearly saving of 1million t of P worth Rs. 5000 crores in the states of Haryana, Punjab and Western Uttar Pradesh excluding intensively cultivated area of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka etc.
